Shane W Smith is a sci-fi and spec fic writer, graphic artist, and his anthology “All the King’s Men” is included on the winner’s Kindle! Here’s a look at the blurb:
Sometimes it’s impossible to mend what has been broken…
Each of them is fleeing something different, but they’ve all come to the same place. When their ship is attacked and marooned in deep space, three dozen refugees pass the time by sharing stories. Things that have happened to them, events they’ve witnessed, and rumours they’ve heard.
As time passes and despair sets in, they must rely upon each other to survive. But when the chips are down, will they all be pulling in the same direction?
Featuring stories from twenty-four brilliant writers from around the world, the All The King’s Men anthology takes a look at the lives of those on the periphery, ordinary people struggling to make sense of their lives and dreams in a galaxy torn apart by civil war.
My Review:
Content: 5 Stars
Tone: 5 Stars
Prose: 4 Stars
Total: 4 Stars
This was something refreshing and new, at least for me. This is a collection of graphic novels with some prose stories interspersed throughout. This is the first time I’ve had the chance to review a graphic novel. I’m an avid manga reader, and have read American comics as a child. This one was able to keep my interest and was engaging with an action-packed sci-fi theme. The dialogue sometimes felt a bit info-dumpy, but did a great job of keeping the story on track. What’s nice about a graphic novel is that the dialogue isn’t the only thing that colors the characters…there’re actual illustrations! I found the artwork excellent and it did a great job of contributing to the story. The illustrations were able to tell the story even if there wasn’t dialogue to back it up.
If this is something you’d think you’d enjoy, I suggest the eBook if you have a tablet like a Kindle Fire, otherwise I suggest the paperback. On the winner’s Kindle, it shows up great. But I tested it on my Kindle Voyage and it struggled to load the pages, so be sure you get the right version!
*This graphic novel is an anthology and my review only applies to Shane W Smith’s work.
I highly recommend “All the King’s Men” for anyone looking to read outside the box and give this massive graphic novel anthology a try!
